Suddenly everyone and everything had an extensive backstory and no character or plot element could exist without somehow tying back to the Jedi Order Keyblade Masters. Then Birth By Sleep happened, and taken on its own it was also fairly coherent, but it was also the point where they started going all in on the Deep Lore™. But if you were willing to take those things in stride there was a cohesive and actually fairly satisfying narrative arc for the first several games (1, CoM, 2, and to some extent 358/2 Days). Like, yeah, you had to get on board with the Kingdom Hearts bullshit when it came to Heartless, Nobodies, Organization XIII, and all that. I'd say it was ridiculous but comprehensible at that point.
